Extra Curricular Activities

After School Sports

Rose Park Primary School is proud to offer students access to a quality After School Sports Program. The school encourages a healthy and active lifestyle and sport is a unique way of contributing to this.

We value the opportunity for ALL students to participate in After School Sport, regardless of ability. After School Sport provides an opportunity to develop physical, social and leadership skills, as well as build friendships, teamwork, patience, self-confidence and discipline.

Chess Club

The Chess program at Rose Park Primary School is strongly supported by our school community and is a popular extra-curricular activity for our students.

Chess is a great learning tool for children of all ages to develop basic thinking skills, problem-solving, forward planning, lateral, logical and sequential thinking as well as memory, visualisation and verbalisation. This amazing game also helps to create new neural connections in the brain.

Chess School SA tutors come into our school on Monday and Friday each week to provide coaching and practice. Students that do well in the school competition will have opportunity to represent the school in the Chess School SA Interschool competitions; where possible, we arrange for these to be held at Rose Park Primary School.

Debating

Rose Park Primary School is proud to offer debating as an extra-curricular activity for students in Year 5 and 6.

Debating promotes the organisation of ideas, clear and effective expression and the ability to argue convincingly. Students develop a strong awareness of the world around them, learning why people have views that do not necessarily correspond with their own. Through the sport of debating, students develop strong research skills within a collaborative environment, formulating arguments to support their team’s case. Participants learn to work collaboratively in small groups; planning, preparing and presenting their debates in interschool competitions, resulting in improved confidence and reasoning skills.

Debating practice sessions are held after school, one afternoon each week Competition rounds will be held at a hosting school site, generally between 5.30 to 6.30pm.

If you would like further information about Rose Park’s Debating Program, please email dl.0169.info@schools.sa.edu.au

Instrumental Music

Rose Park Primary School offers instrumental tuition with Department for Education teachers as part of the Instrumental Music (IM) program. We are fortunate to have teachers in string, woodwind and brass instruments who visit the school on a weekly basis. Students who are enrolled in the IM program take part in one lesson per week. Students can also become a member of the String Ensemble or the Senior Concert Band, and these groups are open to students who may be taking private music lessons, and are not eligible to enrol in IM classes.

Expressions of interest for the IM program will open early in Term 4 each year, to register for enrolment in the following school year. There may be an assessment/aptitude test, and selection process, dependent on demand for places.

Student Eligibility (based on year level):

    • Strings – from Year 3
    • Brass – from Year 4
    • Woodwind – from Year 4

For more information on the IM program, please email Crystelle Ferguson
